Imagine getting your car stolen right in front of you. Sounds like a movie, doesn’t it? Sounds like maybe you would only hear of something like that happening when you’re comfortable in a VIP movie seat, eating your popcorn or nachos, or if you’re really daring, your chili dog, right?
Nope.
I found out recently (because I am incredibly late to the game) that there was a trend on Tiktok called the “care takeover”, where kids (mid- to late-teens) just take cars from unsuspecting people on video, then drive it to some random place like an intersection, and stunt drive like crazy until they’re caught, and there’s a big if in there about that, too. Even if they return the car after, does it really matter?
I honestly can’t even believe how far this generation has come. This is definitely going to make me sound like some old fart who shakes their fist in the air, telling some skateboarding teens to get off my lawn, but I swear that, as each generation passes, the trends get more ridiculous. When I was a teen, it was “do it for the Vine”, which was a trend that basically egged people on in order to do something really stupid so that they’d get popular on Vine, basically doing something that you might find from the movie Jackass.
Now, while that just harmed the individual, these car takeovers are specifically designed to be annoying and even dangerous to a lot of people. The thing is, though, it’s hard to look away. The train is on fire, and it’s getting a lot bigger, but you can’t look away. It’s too…entertaining, in a really strange way.
On one hand, you might keep watching and think that you have to see what happens next. On the other, maybe you’re thinking something like “how much worse could this possibly get? What else are people going to come up with for clout?” and I absolutely understand. Why is it so intriguing to watch?! After seeing it myself, I get it…but I also don’t. I don’t condone the action, and to you reading this, don’t get any funny ideas…but I can’t look away, it’s too ridiculous. Nothing is ever going to be more over-the-top than this, but something always comes, doesn’t it?
In other news, the Gardiner is closing one lane for 3 years.
