Say Radio’s Kristian Walker, John Fairbrother and Kelvin Zhang had the pleasure of sitting down with the Independent Music Production program’s Scott “Reishi” Somerville to talk about his work, creative process and what music means to them.
From finding an old piano on a visit to a farm at the age of 5 and falling in love with music, growing to learn to play a collection of instruments from the guitar, banjo drum kit and many others, to now, in the IMP with over 50 songs being recorded and a 3 part album being planned, music is more than a hobby or career path for Scott, it’s a way of connecting and giving back to the world and people within it.
From our conversation it’s clear to see that Scott has a vision for what they want their music to be and mean. During the interview Scott mentions “I don’t really try to write random stuff; I’m not trying to just put out a vibe: I am trying to say a thing that could be helpful…”
Scott says that music is a lifestyle as well as a profession and that he has already been able to sustain himself with music in some form already by extending his knowledge to to others as a music teacher, when asked what they see themself doing in 10 years time Scott mentions that they will have material out for people to enjoy, and will continue to build his audience and influence, but also says that there are many adventures for music to take a person on.
