Edgar Wright’s 2010 film, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a masterpiece of both editing and writing. Originally written as as graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley, the transition into live action was executed beautifully. The story follows bass player and band member, Scott Pilgrim as he navigates his love life as it complexly unfolds. Bass playing quickly turns into video game style boss fights as Scott must defend his name. To win the heart of his new rollerblading love interest, Ramona Flowers, he must defeat all of her seven evil exes.
The quick style editing keeps the action going non-stop from scene to scene. Every actor in this star studded cast fully commits to their roles, and as absurd as the characters may be, the actors make them real. The comedy is quick and witty, but each character can easily be understood along with there motivations. Between the cinematography and the writing, every scene is bound to have a memorable moment. The characters may not be the most likeable in all facets, but in terms of a fun story, with high action story-telling, I could watch this movie endlessly.
