We regret to inform you that violence swept the streets of Amsterdam last week, following a turbulent soccer match on Thursday. After a 5-0 win by AFC Ajax against Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, Israeli fans and Amsterdam locals clashed in a race riot. In this episode we’ll examine the media narratives that have formed in the aftermath of this event. We’ll explore whether words like “Pogrom” and “Kristallnacht” are right to be invoked. We’ll look at how a number of major media organizations have misinformed or disinformed their audiences about what happened and why. We’ll ask if a pro-Israel bias in legacy media is even beneficial to Jewish folk around the world. Finally, we’ll look at why major media organizations seem increasingly incapable of handling stories with complexity and nuance.
Always be curious,
Sam
