As a change of pace, I decided to do two blog posts this week. One, where I rant about my hatred for people who don’t have any respect for the movie theatres as an establishment, and another where I review the movie I went to see. Now that I got the first one out of the way, we can get down to the bottom line.
Here comes the golden synopsis by yours truly.
Captain America: Brave New World follows the main character, Sam Wilson, who has recently taken the mantle as the new Captain America. Sam still tries to find his footing as the ‘new face of America’ and is trying to find his place within the United States government. This leads Sam on a path to uncover a government conspiracy involving the newly appointed president of the United States, Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross, the former governor with a fiery red side. Between fighting new, international, and somewhat familiar threats, Sam finds himself questioning, not only the sanctity of his inner circle, but his confidence in his own government.
Yeah…that’s what four years of writing university level essays will do to you, you’ll be able to crank out shit like this.
So, the moment of truth. What did I think?
As a long-time fan of Marvel and the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), I’ve come to terms that most fans hold Marvel movies on a pedestal after the grand success of Avengers: Endgame. And by doing so, they expect the same high quality for all the movies to come after it. This isn’t, and can never, be the case. Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of 10 years of universe and character building, so of course it will knock audiences out of their socks.
Going into this movie, many people online, before this movie was out mind you, were already comparing this movie to its predecessor Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was a huge success. By making these assumptions, people raised their expectations way too high, and when a movie doesn’t surpass certain expectations, it’s sure to be received poorly.
I, for one, was content with the movie, but found that it had a few weak spots. For example, I felt that the movie ended very abruptly after the main climax of the movie. I felt as though there was still more to come. Therefore, pacing was a definite issue.
There were also some nitpicky things that I found ultimately diminished the quality of the movie. Elements like the ‘forced’ humor of one of the side characters, the misuse of Giancarlo Esposito’s character, and some of the lack-luster action scenes were also what really caused me to lose interest.
At the end of my reviews, I always tell you to go watch the movie because, at the end of the day, my opinions are solely my own, and you should always come to your own conclusions when it comes to movie watching. I have the firm belief that movies, with the exception of The Wolf Man, are open to all criticisms and you’re free to whatever movies you like. My point is, don’t let my judgements of movies impact your viewing, go out, have some fun, make a night out of it, and have yourself a good, ‘old-fashioned’, theatre experience.
I’ll tell you one thing, the posters that were made for this movie were the best Marvel has made in a long time!
