Another week, another movie to review! How exciting, right?
2025 is going to be a great year for movies! We got the Fantastic Four movie coming out in the summer, the 28 days later sequel, Mickey 17, the new Captain America movie, and the rebooted Superman movie! Suffice to say, the majority of my paychecks will be going towards the movies. But of course, to get through the good stuff, ya gotta get through the shitters first. And if my Wolfman movie review wasn’t already apparent, we’re already off to a shit start.
This week, however, I watched the newest Keke Palmer and SZA movie “One of Them Days”, which, in my defense, there isn’t a whole lot that a couple of dudes can go do on a Friday night in Vaughan, our options are pretty limited so we said “fuck it, why not”, plus…SZA and Keke Palmer…? I’m all for it. So, with that being said, in a year where the movies have been off to a shit start, “One of Them Days” will leave you entertained…kinda.
The movie follows Dreux and Alyssa, two long-time best friends/roommates who find themselves in a race against the clock as they try to make $1,200 dollars to make their rent by the end of the day before they get evicted. The two friends get themselves into all kinds of trouble and run into a cast of colorful characters (not a racial nod, it’s an analogy, don’t come after me), who, in one way or another, act as obstacles in their pursuit to keep their home and, most importantly, their friendship.
This is genuinely how I feel after I write these summaries
SZA and Palmer have great chemistry on the screen and the story keeps you hooked. The movie explores the themes of the ‘race against time’ along with putting characters in situations where the craziest and most outlandish shit will occur. My friend and I collectively agreed that it has a familiar feeling of “The Big Lebowski”, “Friday”, and “30 minutes or less”. Not to say that this movie matches the quality of the ones I listed, but merely, they resemble similar plots.
The movie was pretty funny in certain aspects with regards to the situations Dreux and Alyssa find themself in, especially when they run into one of the characters played by Katt Williams. For the first hour, the story is really gripping and gets you to root for the main characters, but after the main climax of the movie, the story loses steam and begins to drag on. It was really difficult to stay engaged after this point, I think it was the ‘drama’ of two characters losing their friendship that felt forced and unnecessary, especially when there was absolutely zero character building for either character.
All-in-all, I think the film is still worth a watch, the film does have a few good laughs, along with some cringe-worthy moments (I’ll leave that up to you to see for yourself), but ultimately, “One of them Days” is fun entertainment that just misses the mark by an inch.
What a couple of rockets, eh? Holay.
6.5-7/10. Worth a watch.
