2017 has been a year filled with all kinds of different music, same as every year. However, for me, there haven’t been many great ones, which is why I only picked 5 albums this time around. It’d be a crime not to start in descending order, so here goes!
5. Queens of the Stone Age – Villains
This album was something I believe all QotSA fans were dying to hear. After 2013’s ‘…Like Clockwork’, none of us were sure it could get any better. It definitely didn’t! However, this album was a complete change in pace and a necessary departure from the haunting and depressing tracks that comprised the former. Villains is an album that makes you dance and personally, I found it instantly accessible. While a favourite for this year, it doesn’t hold much replay value to me and I’d be perfectly happy going back to the likes of ‘Rated R’ and ‘Songs for the Dead’.
4. Steel Panther – Lower the Bar
The fourth album by Hair Metal/Comedy Act Steel Panther! They certainly did Lower the Bar I found on the first on the listen, however, after giving it a few more listens it really grew on me. Like their other albums there are only a couple of tracks that take the cake and feel like total filler, but the tracks that shine on this one really prove to be some of their best tracks! They sound fantastic live too! Also, make sure you check out their cover of Cheap Trick’s ‘She’s Tight’! SO GOOD!
The comeback of the decade if I do say so myself! We hadn’t heard from Mr. LG since the last shotty effort from Beady Eye, but this time he’s back with a cause, and a bloody good one at that! This album only took me two listens to digest and I was already singing along and feeling like a Rock n’ Roll Star! There was so much buildup to this album and it was perfect. People were sceptical enough not to get their hopes up and then BOOM! Might as well have been a new Oasis record (except Chinatown, that one’s shit)!
2. Greta Van Fleet – From the Fires
Holy shit, these kids are good! Their first and only music video for ‘Highway Tune’ took the world by storm earlier this year and now they’ve got this incredible double EP. This is straight up Rock n’ Roll making a comeback and it’s taken directly from the likes of Led Zeppelin (particularly the vocals) and every other ’70s Rock band! This EP has 6 original tracks and 2 covers – one of which is ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ by Sam Cooke, and it’s probably my favourite rendition of this song EVER! I wish these lads the best and I can’t wait until they stop by in Toronto. It’s nice to see that there’s still this insane amount of talent out there and that we can breathe new life into something that has already made history.
1. Mastodon – Emperor of Sand
100% the most emotional album of this year and possible one of the most of all times. If you don’t listn to Heavy Metal music then you may not understand that feeling through the distorted guitars, roars and cries, but there is some real pain behind this album. It makes it that much more beautiful! Mastodon have almost been togther 20 years and they have yet to release a bad album. Each one takes a different approach to the different subgenres of Metal, however this time around, I believe they have created a style which appeals to all of them. Never mind the vocals, the guitar solos themselves speak all the trials and tribulations these guys have been through. To me, it’s the most beautiful album ever, telling the story of dying. The good and the bad. It is quite literally a journey. Check it out!
That’s it for 2017! We’ve got plenty to look forward to next year, a new Alice in Chains record, Iron Maiden maybe? Who knows!! Until then.
