You may know him as Drake or maybe as the “6ix God” or even perhaps Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi. Representing Toronto, Canada, he has become an international sensation with all of his four studio albums going Platinum according to the Recording Industry Association of America standards. However, in contrary to his current success, things were not always so easy for this multi-millionaire rapper. He was born as Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24, 1985 in Toronto, Canada, to an African-American father and a Jewish mother. Following his parent’s divorce, his mother raised him. Consequently, he grew up embracing the Jewish culture where he attended a Jewish day school and even celebrated his adulthood with a Bar Mitzvah. He states, “Being Jewish is kind of a cool twist. It makes me unique.” Drake officially began his career as an actor for the Degrassi: The Next Generation, where he played the physically handicapped Jimmy Brooks. This became Drake’s stepping-stone into his ever-expanding career. He soon followed with his musical career, releasing mixtapes and working with the hottest artists. Following the incredible success of his mixtapes, Drake signed with Young Money Entertainment, led by his mentor, Lil Wayne. He released his official debut album, Thank Me Later, in 2010, which became an instant success, selling over 447,000 copies within the first week. Since then, every released album has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 while receiving Platinum certifications on almost every released single. Drake has become one of the most influential artists since his debut. His motto of YOLO (You Only Live Once) became a very popular saying amongst not only his fans but also the public. Also, one cannot forget the legendary “Hotline Bling” music video. It birthed millions of memes, parody videos, and even Halloween costumes thanks to Drake’s unique dancing techniques and the iconic Moncler jacket and Timberlands. In addition, he has also become synonymous to his hometown, Toronto. He lives up to his name of the “6ix God” by integrating the city into his songs, businesses, and lifestyle. He has helped to create a specific brand image of Toronto and promoted it to represent the city to outsiders. Drake has also combined his love for basketball and Toronto to be appointed as the Toronto Raptor’s Global Ambassador. It is possible to talk about Drake without mentioning Rihanna? Probably not. The two have been romantically linked ever since his debut as a rapper, alluding to each other in their works and being seen together on dates. In Rihanna’s hit single, Work, the couple seemed to be getting intimate while claiming to be merely friends. Will they be the next power couple? Who knows, but hopefully RiRi doesn’t fight with Drake at Cheesecake because he loves to go there. It is undeniable that Drake is one of the hottest and most influential artists right now as he brings dominating sensations with a release of a new single, fashion line, or even an Instagram post. It seems as if he has an endless pool of potentiality to be more successful as he conquers through charts and businesses. Hopefully he continues his career as a musician to produce good music for his devoted fans.
