You Should Be Here Review

When I listen to music I have to make sure that the artist I’m listening to is sending a message, knows how to sing, and is really passionate about what they’re doing.

For the past year I’ve been listening to a singer named Kehlani. I started listening to her because I saw people liking her photos on Instagram and I heard a song that she did earlier in the year. I really got into her music and I became a huge fan of hers. If you listen to her music you know that she is really good at what she does. Whether it’s writing a song or performing in front of people and even singing. In April of 2015, she released her second mixtape You Should Be Here (YSBH). It was the best album I heard this year and I couldn’t stop listening to it. I still put it on repeat every day. It’s one of those mixtapes that you can relate to as a young female or male. On her mixtape, she talks about her mother that wasn’t really around when she was growing up, she talks about love, and she also talks about loving yourself which is a big thing because some people don’t love themselves and they should. She is such an inspirational singer and honestly, I look up to her.

The mixtape features artists such as Chance the Rapper, BJ the Chicago Kid, and many more. If you don’t know Kehlani, she was on America’s Got Talent with her group named Poplyfe. Kehlani is only 20 years old and she never really had a place to stay. She was couch hopping and ended up releasing 2 successful mixtapes. Her first mixtape was Cloud 19 and on that one she talks more about love. She just finished her 3rd tour this year and she’s nominated for her first Grammy award for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. Over the summer I went to her concert that she did at the Mod City in Toronto and although it was a small venue and it was packed it was a concert worth going to. Her singing was absolutely beautiful. She put on a killer performance and she had everyone in the crowd singing along with her. She is one of those artists that sound exactly the same live as she does on her mixtape and not a lot of artist sound that way. If you don’t listen to her, I suggest you do because her music is just amazing. She is such a humble and down to earth person. You can tell how passionate she is through her music and the message she is sending. She will not disappoint.
